BIRD WATCHING

In search of birds unique to the archipelago

Species such as the Juan Fernández hummingbird (Sephanoides fernandensis), theJuan Fernández cachudito (Anairetes fernandezianus), the Más Afuera Rayadito (Aphrastura masafuerae), and the Juan Fernández petrel or shearwater (Pterodroma externa) are some of the 15 native nesting birds – six marine and nine terrestrial – of these islands.

In the surroundings of San Juan Baautista, most of these can be seen and photographed in the sector of Yunque Plazoleta, Salsipuedes Look-out point, Farelario and on bird-watching boat trips.
